A great cast but not at all what I was expecting, in the worst possible way. Even Greg Kinnear, whom I love, couldn't save this one. I also really like Nathan Lane but clearly the role wasn't for him. Julianne Moore's character was just naive and stupid, nearly forcing a former student to allow the school to perform his play. It's one thing to be encouraging but quite another to be borderline obsessive. And of course her relationship with this student was a huge turn off. I watched about a half hour before I decided that I'd had enough. The previews failed to show just how bad this movie really is. No wonder I'd never heard of it.

I would not want to meet this author. She would have me pulling my hair out and wanting to smack her at the same time, if, in fact she actually does the things that she writes about. This incredibly small book is filled with tons of ways to irritate and infuriate people. I did find some of them hilarious but toward the end, they became really stupid. I know that this book is meant for entertainment, but I know plenty of people who have taken this advice to heart and believe me, these tactics work when trying to annoy someone. I looked through this author's list of other books and I definitely won't be reading anymore, given the subject matter, but this was somewhat fun to read and for the most part it made me laugh. I could tell that the author is from the UK because some of the things she describes are clearly not how they are in the US, but I think these can be applied everywhere. I just hope that people don't take this book to heart. I can't deal with more annoying people. The world is full enough of them already.

I tried watching this ages ago, but never got very far and now that I've seen the entire movie, I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy it the first time. It could be because I'm older now and the story finally resonated with me. But whatever the reason, I'm glad I gave it another try. This is a beautiful and heartwarming movie about two elderly sisters who find a badly injured young man (Andrea) washed up on the shore. They take him in and take care of him until he becomes part of their family. They learn that he is Polish, but they teach him how to converse in English and then discover that he has a wonderful talent for playing the violin. He meets a woman who is so impressed with his talent that she wants him to use it on a bigger level. The thing I liked most about this movie was the scenery (the seaside was gorgeous), but I absolutely loved Judi Dench. She was my favorite of the two sisters, and she had a sweetness and innocence about her. *spoiler* She develops feelings for Andrea and had it been done differently, it could have taken the movie in a completely different direction. However, the way it was presented was sweet and very subtle and led to a few touching moments I really loved this movie and I'm glad I gave it another try. It was definitely worth it.

Although the synopsis doesn't mention it, this is a movie about two adults with autism who meet at a Jewish Community Center Social Skills group. David, the main character comes across at first as very annoying and the jokes he constantly told were a little offensive to the point where I turned it off. But I'm glad I gave it another chance and watched it all the way to the end. It was interesting to see the romantic relationship between David and Sarah grow, despite the reservations of his parents (who were absolutely horrible in the way they treated him-especially his mother). I could have done without the almost-graphic sex scene but I'm glad they cut it short before it became too much. This is a sweet movie overall and the ending was really nice. As a person who worked with people who have autism for over twenty years, this movie really gave me a new perspective. I found it interesting that almost the entire cast was autistic as well.

Horrible, stupid movie about two parents who decide to separate but have trouble raising their two kids with joint custody. I like Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney, but I hated this movie. Too much swearing from the get-go and too many references to sex in the thirty minutes that I was able to tolerate it. I won't even mention the gross humor and the way the kids have such disrespect for their parents. I mean, I know that all kids go through that, but this was beyond ridiculous. I read a review by Roger Ebert because I was curious about the ending and I'm glad I did because watching the rest of this would have been painful.

I first read this little book back in 1992 when I lost my dad to suicide. I was reminded of it again at a grief counseling session after the unexpected loss of my husband this past January. I read it in about 30 minutes because there's not a lot of words. Some pages only had a few lines but as a whole it's a very simple and sweet book with positive messages and suggestions for coping. I definitely recommend it and may read it again.

This movie was a bit of a disappointment. Although I knew that it took place at a Morman camp, I wasn't expecting it to be so religious. Not a bad thing at all, but if you're not religious or these kinds of things bother you, it might be best to skip this movie altogether. I was disappointed that the movie wasn't funnier. I think I only laughed once and I found some of it to be ridiculous. I mean (spoiler alert) who gets a bloody nose from having a snowball thrown in their face? Anyway, my main problem with this movie is that almost everyone in it (the adults anyway) annoyed me to no end. This movie did remind me a little of my junior high days and the retreats we took, so in that respect it was a nice movie. I think that really it would be perfect for a youth group of middle school or junior high age to watch at church, but as an adult I found the whole thing a little silly. There are scenes involving a bear that were beyond ridiculous and like I said, most of the adults annoyed me, as did some of the kids. Overall it's an okay movie but I prefer something with a little more humor in it.

This movie was completely different than I expected, but in a good way. Most of the acting was really good but I didn't really like any of Hope's coworkers. Their performances seemed a bit forced. This is a wonderful story and I'm anxious to read the book, which I'm going to guess is probably a bit better than the movie. There were some parts I absolutely loved but a few were predictable and a little disappointing. I liked how things just fell into place throughout the whole movie, which made for a heartwarming story, not just for Christmas but anytime of year.

Contrary to most of the reviews I have read on various sites, I really liked this movie. I haven't read the book in its entirety, but this movie was well made and had some nice performances. I don't have anything to compare this to, but I did enjoy Martin Sheen. He was the only actor I recognized but he was very good in this. I know a lot of people hate this version but I did end up crying at the end, so that says a lot for me.

This is a sweet book designed for kids but I found it helpful in applying it to the recent loss of my husband. I like the idea of creating a memory box and I think I'm going to do that as soon as I can.

Prancer Returns, DVD

This movie tries too hard to be the original. Had I not seen the original so many times and not loved it so much I might like this movie more. But I've always said that sequels only work when they have all or at least some of the original cast. This has neither but it tries to follow the same storyline. I do like John Corbett who had a big role in "Prancer Returns", but this movie was a little more mean-spirited than the original. Supposedly for the past ten years they've had a Prancer ceremony in honor of Jessica Riggs, the main character from "Prancer". But there is barely any mention of her except in passing. But overall, the movie is cute, but it's not anywhere near as magical as the first. However, as a first viewing it's worth watching.

The thing I liked most about this sequel is that it has all the same cast members, which is always a good thing. I liked this movie slightly better than the original mostly due to the lack of "gross jokes", but to be honest neither movie is that great. This sequel added a new character to the mix which made it more interesting than the first but I didn't really care for him.

Not sure if this is exactly fair or not but I watched the movie on Netflix and at first I found it so bad that I turned it off. But then I decided to give it another try. If you can get past the gross parts (you'll see what I mean), it's an okay movie. Reminded me a tiny bit of Clueless (which is a thousand times better) probably due to the main character narrating it. I can't speak for the book as far as how accurately it's portrayed, but the movie actually held my interest and had some really cute parts. Not a lot of humor, but overall I enjoyed it.

It took me a long time (and about five tries) to get into this movie (blame it on lack of sleep and distractions), but I'm glad I was finally able to watch the whole thing. Overall it's a beautifully done movie with a great cast. I loved Helen Hunt and this was the first time I'd seen her in a dramatic role. She was amazing and so beautiful. I also loved Scarlett Johansson and she played her role wonderfully. The scenery is breathtaking and unless I missed something, there was absolutely no swearing or nudity, which is a rarity in movies these days. This is based on an Oscar Wilde Play called Lady Windermere's Fan, which I'm curious about. I'm definitely interested in reading it now. But back to the movie-I loved that this is a period piece. Those movies are always intriguing. I admit the movie moved a little slowly but it's worth watching for the twist in the storyline. The ending was really nice as well, although it does leave the twist unfinished.

I absolutely loved this! I miss seeing the Glove Trekker series on PBS. This travel show is wonderful. The host is adorable and funny and she makes Eastern Canada really stand out. This show is really well done. I love Canada but have not yet been to Eastern Canada so the places in this DVD are definitely on my list! My only complaint about this DVD is that it's not subtitled or closed captioned but it wasn't a problem for me. The DVD also has two bonus episodes of a different travel show featuring the actor Bradley Cooper. Episode 1 was mostly about rafting and it didn't really hold my interest, but Episode 2 was amazing. I loved it. I had to wait a really long time to get this DVD from the library, but was so worth it!

I love the music of Rogers and Hammerstein, but some songs (such as "I Enjoy Being a Girl") seemed out of place and I actually had to look it up to see if it was originally written for "Flower Drum Song". Ugh, what a depressing horrible movie. Prior to this I had only seen Frank Langella in a few movies (most notably "Dave", which I love), but he can't save this movie and neither can anyone in the cast. I don't like Billy Crudup to begin with and he kind of irritated me all through this movie. Despite the movie's premise, I expected it to be touching. Instead it's dark, unfunny and just... angry. Had it only been Brian and Raymond who went on the trip to Oregon and then bonded in the process, I would have liked this movie a lot more. The only good thing about this movie was the music but unfortunately good songs don't make up for this mess. I didn't care for Christina Applegate either, who plays the mother. Her kids are as screwed up as the rest of her family. I didn't see the point of her daughter lifting up her shirt and taking a picture of her chest, but surprise surprise, it comes back to haunt her later in the movie. Now I know why this has been in my Watchlist for so long but at least it's over now. Too bad I can't get those 100 minutes back.
