The previews made this movie look absolutely adorable with the realistic Winnie The Pooh characters that made me want to hug them. Unfortunately it moved too slow for me and I was left disappointed.

When I first saw this in the theatre in 1992, I loved it and couldn't get enough of it. But the more I watch it the more I dislike it. As a whole the movie is okay but Robin Williams as the Genie (God rest his soul) was just over the top. There are some hilarious moments, but there's probably a reason I haven't watched this one in ages. Just not into the whole "Arabian Nights" thing and I think that the movie moves a little too quickly. Kind of makes your head spin. That being said, I can't imagine anyone else in the role of the genie. When I first saw this in the theatre in 1992, I loved it and couldn't get enough of it. Dumbo has always been one of my favorites. How can anyone not fall in love with a sweet little elephant with big ears? I love the message included and it's sad that bullying has become such a fixture of our society for so long. How can anyone not love Bambi? Yes, I know that the fate of his mother is what shies people away, but this movie is so well done and has lots of sweet and funny moments. I love how it realistically shows Bambi grow up and he has to take on a newfound independence when the unexpected happens. But he does so with the help of some wonderful friends. I love the way this movie comes full circle. And the animation and music are beautiful. I absolutely love the song "April Showers" and the way they incorporated it into the film. I put off watching this until now because I knew that it couldn't possibly come close to the original Muppet Movies and the ones that followed. I was right, but only partially right. I really enjoyed it and I loved that it has all of the original Muppets and pays homage to the original movie and to the classic Muppet Show. There were some pretty funny moments but some obnoxiously silly ones as well. I liked the cameos of Jim Parsons, Selena Gomez and Neil Patrick Harris, but I would have liked to have seen some of the stars from the original movie, like Steve Martin. Really enjoyed the musical numbers. This is a very sweet movie that tells the stories of cats who live in Istanbul. Even though it's subtitled, you won't have any problem understanding it, because not much dialogue is needed. The scenery is beautiful and it's a very relaxing film. It can be a bit 'boring' due to lack of dialogue and so forth but I really enjoyed it. This would be a nice movie to add to my collection. I didn't really know much about this movie so it was nice to watch it without any real expectations. That being said, it took me a very long time to get through the entire thing. I think I started it over about ten times (no exaggeration!) because I would either get very distracted or fall asleep. For the most part it was okay. I enjoyed the acting and I loved Emma Thompson in the role of the headmaster, but even though it ended the way it probably should have, I was left disappointed. The main thing I liked about the movie was the era of it and the music, but the storyline fell a little flat for me. I didn't expect to like this movie at all. In fact, I hesitated to even watch it. However, curiosity got the best of me. If I had to sum up "Rocketman" in one word it would be "weird". I sort of knew this was a musical, but I didn't expect the actors and actresses to suddenly break out in song. That startled me a bit and had me rolling my eyes. Thankfully, the middle part of the movie is more dramatic and avoids that ridiculousness. I almost turned this off, but I'm glad I kept watching. I gave it three stars mainly because the lead actor was excellent and I liked that there were a lot of unknowns in this. The movie was a bit confusing when it came to Elton's love life, but it wasn't so much that I couldn't follow what was going on. That being said, if you are uncomfortable with same sex kissing or anything else, you will hate this because there is a lot of of it. Honestly, it makes me uncomfortable to watch (although I have nothing against it personally), but I didn't really mind it too much after a while. I think it was necessary to show because it's so much a part of Elton's life. It was interesting to learn how he came up with his famous stage name and the history behind the development of his songs. Overall, I wouldn't say this is a great movie unless you're a huge Elton John fan, but the music is great and I think it speaks a lot for the movie to say that he had a hand in producing it. The main actor had a great voice and is very talented. I think this movie could have been a little longer to fill in some of the blanks, but it's worth a watch, if only for the music. The ending credits feature Elton and made me smile.I didn't expect to like this movie at all. In fact, I hesitated to even watch it. However, curiosity got the best of me. This movie was on my TBW list forever and I should have really left it there-forever. If you're expecting to see a movie along the lines of Dirty Dancing or Shall We Dance, don't bother with this one. But I'll get into that in a minute. First the good (there isn't much)...I was surprised at the number of familiar faces in this movie. Aside from Marissa Tomei, there was John Goodman, Donnie Walhberg, Mary Steenbergen, Sean Astin, Danny DeVito (in a cameo), David Paymer and Allen Arkin to name a few. I didn't really care for Robert Carlyle in the lead role, but I really enjoyed John Goodman's performance throughout most of the movie. Sadly that's mostly what I liked about the movie. Now for the bad. First of all, this movie really isn't about dancing. It's a sad movie (or it could have been, if they had done it right). It moves REALLY slow and never really goes anywhere. The main character is a new widower and as a widow myself, I hated the way his grief group was portrayed. It was all men, which I found strange, but also the way the grief counselor was practically ridiculing them was disturbing. The movie flashes back and forth and is mainly told from John Goodman's POV. Long story short, he asks Robert Carlyle to go to the dancing school in his place, which is where Robert meets Marissa Tomei. I found it weird that a man who claimed to have never danced before, suddenly picked up the dances just by watching Mary Steenbergen for about two minutes. There was no real dance instruction and no development of the characters. He does come to terms with his wife's death but ends up scattering her ashes in the place where she had passed away, which was incredibly tacky, given the way she died. Another thing that bothered me is that this movie shows boys smoking-boys that are clearly 12 years old or younger and also shows them beating up girls, calling them and other boys disgusting names, etc. ***I have to add spoilers here so don't read on if you don't want to know. ****As I said before, the movie switches back and forth between three different "storylines". John Goodman's is told in flashback. He gets into an accident which Robert Carlyle witness after the fact and stays with him in the ambulance while the paramedics work to save him. John tells Robert that he's supposed to meet this woman at the dance school-the woman is a girl that he went to dance school with as a kid (the one he beat up). He asks Robert to go in his place to meet this woman. At the end of the movie we find out what had transpired to bring him to where he met Robert Carlyle. Up until that part, I had sympathy for his character, because he told his story with such heartfelt emotion that it was rather sad. But his true backstory was a huge disappointment and I no longer felt sorry for him. Robert does meet the woman in question but she is a complete witch, who doesn't even remember her planned "date" with John Goodman. I found that kind of sad given the fact that it was so prominent throughout the movie. The more this movie dragged on, the angrier I became and the less I liked it. I didn't expect much out of it, but this was far worse than I ever imagined. This movie was on my TBW list forever and I should have really left it there-forever. Ross Lynch has followed the disturbing trend of former Disney Channel stars who, once they've "graduated", decide to make terrible, very adult movies that would make Disney cringe. In fact, he was the only reason I even attempted to watch this horrible movie. It's disturbing on a million different levels and extremely creepy. I admit that Ross did a great job in his portrayal of a young Jefferey Dahmer, but seeing him in this role was just alarming. This movie sounded interesting because I don't know that much about Jefferey Dahmer but it felt like he was just being made fun of and teased during the whole movie. There was a fan club for him created by some kids who pretended to like him a lot, mainly for his odd outbursts in school that made it look like he was having a seizure or something. I thought that maybe that's what drove him to be the person he became but they never really said. Even the ending was just kind of like "figure it out for yourself" This is a very creepy movie that includes nudity but very little swearing.
DO NOT watch this with the anticipation that you will see any resemblance to Austin Moon from the Disney show "Austin and Ally". You will be severely disappointed.Ross Lynch has followed the disturbing trend of former Disney Channel stars who, once they've "graduated", decide to make terrible, very adult movies that would make Disney cringe. "Irene" was promising from the start; funny moments, quirky characters. I wish I knew what happened, but somewhere around the half hour mark, the swearing and sex references started and grew increasingly worse until I almost turned it off. The F word was prominent throughout followed by the phrase "SMD" (abbreviated), which was uttered by nearly everyone in the movie-even the residents of the senior living facility.
Had this movie not had all of the swearing and disgusting sex talk (references, etc), it could have been great; inspiring even. Irene for the most part is a likeable character who worships Geena Davis (who narrates the movie, talks to Irene and-and appears briefly in the film toward the end) , but even she joined the "sex talk/swearing" crowd eventually.
The thing I hated about this movie is that all of this swearing and sex talk was completely unnecessary. The basic storyline is about a girl who is ridiculed for her weight and her looks but doesn't let it stop her from her dreams. Even Geena Davis mentions in the movie that she'd made a movie called "Earth Girls Are Easy'" and that it didn't ruin her. Kind of an ironic statement given that she chose to do a movie like this. There was no nudity, but seriously, what kind of high school would send kids who were suspended to a senior living facility where the resident are just as bad with the sex talk and swearing as the students?
The music was great and I loved that Geena Davis was the main focus of Irene's quest to follow her dream. I loved that this movie takes place in Canada but the swearing.... Yes, I know I keep going back to that, but it completely ruined what could have been an amazing movie. The previews make it look great, but I ended up fast-forwarding the movie until I got to Gena Davis' scene and then again toward the end.
Watching this movie makes me want a remake and I really hope someone will do it, sans swearing and sex talk, but if that happened, I would guess that the movie would be about fifteen minutes long. Just a terrible, terrible movie with a great message. That is a tragedy because so many young girls could benefit from watching this, but I wouldn't wish this movie on anyone."Irene" was promising from the start; funny moments, quirky characters. This movie had been on my TBW list forever and I'm really glad that I finally watched it. I didn't expect to love this movie so much, but it was amazing. The cast including Hector Elizondo (whom I've loved in so many movies and TV shows-Monk in particular), Jacqueline Orbradors (whom I loved on NYPD Blue) and Elizabeth Pena (love her too!) were great! I really liked Paul Rodriguez because although he had some funny lines but it was nice to see a more dramatic side of him opposite Elizabeth Pena.
The storyline is family oriented, centering around a family of three daughters and their father and the relationship of the daughters with their respective love interests. It flipped back and forth between stories but it was really easy to follow and not confusing at all.
The food-OMG, the food shown was absolutely amazing and the filmmakers have made the food a star, which rivals the actors and actresses.
There is barely any swearing and no nudity at all, which was a wonderful surprise. Loved everything about this movie except for a few plot holes that could have been explained better, but overall "Tortilla Soup" is wonderful. This book was so much more than I expected. After reading a couple of books (non-related) that were hard to get into, I found myself immersed in this one. I was drawn to the characters-particularly Alma and her devotion to her family; her husband Artuo and her daughter Maribel. I enjoyed reading about her family's journey from Mexico to New Jersey in the hopes of a better life but the struggles they found there were real. I gained a lot of empathy for them because they weren't native English speakers and that presented a problem for everyone. They befriended another family who had a boy named Mayor. He was one of the most interesting characters. Aside from Alma, I really liked him most of the way through. For the most part I really liked his relationship with Maribel.
Maribel had previously suffered a horrible accident while in Mexico, but although it is mentioned several times in the first part of the book, no details are given until around page 100. At that point, the story seemed to move faster and faster and it definitely got more interesting.
Toward the end of the book, Mayor makes a very bad decision which affects everyone and it gave an ending that I was not at all prepared for.
So the things I didn't like about this book was that I wish that the Spanish words had been described in English so that people who aren't fluent or familiar with Spanish would be able to understand. However, it didn't change my view of the book. I didn't like the way Mayor seemed to change toward the end and the ending focused so much on the consequences that we never get to see what happens to him as a result of his actions.
The book is written well, but I didn't like the way there were random characters thrown in. Each chapter is told by a different character-most of them are Alma and Mayor, but there are a few others, like her husband Arturo. However there are also other characters who simply told their stories of leaving their home country and ending up in New Jersey, but they were never mentioned again and I'm not sure how they fit into the story. That part was kind of annoying and made it a little confusing. I wish they had simply focused on the main characters.
I'm glad I read this and it definitely makes me feel more empathetic toward people who may not speak or understand English and what it's like to be in a foreign country where everything seems new. That's probably the best thing that could come out of reading a book like this-empathy. The world needs more of it.This book was so much more than I expected. Hope loves ballet and baseball, but must choose between the two when her life becomes too much to handle. This was the initial premise of the movie, but once she chose her path, the other fell by the wayside and wasn’t mentioned again. Had she been able to continue both without the pressure, it would have made for a much more interesting storyline. I hated almost every adult in this, from her parents (who were horribly demanding-what kind of father calls his daughter a quitter when she doesn’t chose the path that he wants?) to her baseball coach to her dance mentors. There was not one word of encouragement from any of the adults at all, and when Hope meets her idol, a prima ballerina, the woman is rude and conceited. The film was pretty predictable in the way it ended and more than once I rolled my eyes at the ridiculous way they got out certain situations such a traffic jam on the California highway en route to a huge performance. It must be nice to have such great connections. I liked that there was no swearing or nudity, and it’s a good movie for young girls who are interested in dancing, but the adults left a lot to be desired.Hope loves ballet and baseball, but must choose between the two when her life becomes too much to handle.
