I recently learned that there's a word for people like me who have had math challenges their entire lives; Dyscalculia. After reading Henry Winkler's book series "Hank Zipzer" about dyslexia, I was cautious to see if there were any books on dyscalculia. I found this one as an e-book from the library. Although I didn't read every word and just kind of glossed over most of it, it was an interesting read. Most of it was geared toward helping children who have dyscalculia, but there are a few tips for adults.
Quite honestly, this book kind of depressed me and brought up bad memories.
I hadn't been to school in years and I'd always regretted not getting a degree. Turns out I was ONE class short of it. The problem was that I placed into a very "low" math class and in order to advance to the class that actually counted toward a degree, it required taking three classes as prerequisites. Taking the 'easy' math class I was in was so stressful that I never perused math further. I ended up getting a certificate which I was proud of, but that 'dream' of getting a degree (and the fact that almost every job application asks what kind of degree you have), was always in my mind.
My most recent experience was last fall when I decided to go back to school and pursue a degree in a different field. I had dreams of taking classes and getting good grades, but my dream was shattered when I was put into a math class (the "easiest" one). I ended up dropping the class based on my very supportive instructor's recommendation. Had I chosen to take it over, it would have meant passing that class plus four more to get into the class that counted toward graduation. Ultimately I decided that it was going to take too long to peruse, and that I've gotten by this long without a degree and I've had a successful career path so far.
Now that you know my history, I only mention it because I did appreciate the information in this book. I will be reading it again more thoroughly at a later date, but I was curious as to the content.
The author is clearly British or English because words like "Ticks" instead of "Checkmarks", etc. are used. Sometimes it was hard to figure out what they meant, but I got the jest of it.
This book is a great resource for teachers and parents of learning challenged students as it gives great information. Adults may have to hunt for information geared toward them, but it's worth a look. And the cartoons are pretty cute too.I recently learned that there's a word for people like me who have had math challenges their entire lives; Dyscalculia. I had this book for a long time before I finally read it (the blue cover and just the word blue are what initially drew me to it) but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It was a quick read as some of the chapters are barely two pages long, but the storyline was compelling enough that I could hardly put it down for long. I really liked the characters of Iris and Ambrose and although this book was about her terrible experience in being sent to an Insane Asylum and the people that she meets there, I wish it would have focused more on Isabel and Ambrose, but the author did give a nice balance in telling stories about the other people involved such as the Doctor and his wife and son. The son plays a huge part in this book and it would be interesting to read another book about what happens to him after this one ends. I really felt for Iris and I wasn't prepared for the outcome of this story. Normally I don't like war stories but this one was written really well and it was obvious that the author did a lot of research in writing it. My one complaint is that the POV's changed frequently and without warning. There are no 'lines' to separate one POV from another so I'd be reading what I thought was Iris's POV and then realize that it had switched to the Doctor's (or some other character). Other than that, it's a great book and I do recommend it.I had this book for a long time before I finally read it (the blue cover and just the word blue are what initially drew me to it) but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. To quote the wonderful Henry Winkler..."Oh my God " this book is incredible.
I am obsessed with this man (in a non-stalking sort of way; I just love him to pieces), so when I read that he was going to be in Portland, Oregon I jumped at the chance to see him.
He was hilarious and heartwarming on stage and a lot of the things he said almost moved me to tears.
After the event, I had the immense honor to have my picture taken with him, since he offered to do so with the 500+ of us who had come to see him. We only said two words to each other; "Hi" and "Thank you", but that moment made my year.
I've had this book since December of 2023 and starting it on Leap Day 2024 seemed fitting.
From the very first page I was hooked, although the first part didn't hold my interest as much until he came to "Happy Days" and then it really took off.
I can see why it won the Goodreads Best Humor award for 2023. Henry is hilarious.
He's also very honest.
I admit that probably 85% of the stories he's written here (yes he skips around a lot) were stories that I'd heard him tell in interviews and a lot of them he told to the interviewer in Portland.
But Henry has a way of communicating to where you don't mind hearing or reading about his dyslexia or how he created Fonzie over and over again. Believe me, I've watched hundreds of his interviews on YouTube, and the one that made me a fan (I've always liked him)was his answer to a question about his relationship with Ron Howard. He was so warm and honest that I was deeply moved.
I started reading the Hank Zipzer, Ghost Buddy, Alien Superstar and Detective Duck books and they've all been wonderful.
This autobiography is amazing. As you read, he's speaking to you, not at you and you feel like you're in a New York deli having lunch with him.
He's incredibly honest and while he doesn't really badmouth anyone (actually there were a couple, but he apologized for it). There's no real name dropping. He expresses his insecurity throughout the book, which made him more real.
The only thing I was disappointed about was that he didn't mention the Hallmark Christmas movie that he did in 2008. It's not a huge thing in his career but I love that movie so much. Didn't really expect him to mention it,but hoped.
At 246 pages, it's not a very long book, but it packs a lot of information.
A lot of the information near the end of the book is directed toward the reader, giving information on how to better yourself. It's not a self help book, but this is exactly what he did on stage; talk to us as though we were friends.

Three stars is a very generous rating but I didn't have the heart to say that I disliked 'Sesame Street!". I should be grateful that the old episodes are on DVD, but this one disappointed me enough to remove the second and third disc from my queue. I got more enjoyment out of finding old clips on YouTube than in skimming through this DVD. Only one episode is shown and from that the bonus features only show clips from the one episode. I was hoping for some later episodes, but the episode on Disc 1 was from 1969 and not the later 70's, which are the ones I remember most fondly. Like others, I hate that they felt the need to put the "disclaimer" at the beginning, saying that the material is for adults and may not be relevant for today's preschoolers. Since when are counting, colors and the alphabet considered controversial and obsolete?
If I were rating this series based solely on the memories that resurfaced from it, I'd give it five stars. However, as a whole, I was a bit disappointed. Disc 1 is probably the most interesting of the 3 since it includes the premiere episode as well as a 30 minute segment of the Sesame Street promo. Disc 2 contains 2 episodes as does Disc 3. My disappointment is this.... I would have liked to have seen more episodes included, and some better bonus materials. Their idea of "Bonus Materials" is to list clips of the "advertisements" (cartoons about letters and numbers, etc) or clips with the Muppets. I got the feeling that these discs were intended for adults who wanted to relive their childhood by seeing these old episodes again. If this is the case, they really lost out on a great opportunity by not including interviews with cast members, a history of Sesame Street, etc in the bonus materials. I would have been interested in knowing why 3 actors have played Gordon as well as some other info about the "human" characters.
That being said, I was amazed at how much I remembered, right down to the song lyrics, even though I have not seen some of these clips in over 30 years! Disc 3 was the most interesting, since I instantly recognized parts of the show that I'd seen before. The other 2 discs included earlier shows. My major disappointment is that Disc 1 has Episode One, but then in Disc Two, it skips to around Episode 130 and the second episode is around 147. Each episode lists the date it was aired, and I noticed in Disc 3 that some of the segments were starting to repeat themselves. That being said, it wasn't a complete disappointment but I would have liked to have seen more substantial bonus materials. I don't know if there are extra discs included if the set is purchased, as opposed to renting from this site. Still, this is a great way to relieve your childhood or to introduce a show you loved to your children.
*I checked this out on two separate occasions; the second being that it appears in a search for Henry Winkler. However, although Henry did a couple of very short 'sets' (Ron Howard was in one of those), he doesn't appear anywhere in this DVD set. That's a shame.Three stars is a very generous rating but I didn't have the heart to say that I disliked 'Sesame Street!". It's hard to know how to describe this series. Honestly, it's not good. It's unfunny, contains nudity and is very crude. However the ONLY reason that I watched it is because of Henry Winkler. His scenes are the saving grace of this show, meaning hilarious. I was hoping it would be along the lines of ER, but this is an internet show, so each episode is only 11 minutes long. I watched the first episode in it's entirity, but the rest I fast foreworded and just watched Henry's scenes, but the rest made the episodes seem much longer. It's hard to know how to describe this series. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this book, but it was just mediocre. The small amount that I read was... well, interesting to say the least.
I was particularly interested in the section about "Almost Live " which was like a smaller, local version of "Saturday Night Live". Unfortunately he doesn't talk a lot about it, which really didn't surprise me.
I don't know if it was intentional but he came across as very arrogant and self centered.
The pictures he included were not PG rated and some of the info was TMI, but in a funny way. Speaking of funny, the funniest section will only be funny to those who've ever lived in Seattle, which is his "travel guide" to the city. Otherwise, it does have useful information.
It's a really long book and I'm glad I at least gave it a glance. I was never a fan of "The Soup" or "Community", but it was cool to learn a few things about Joel that I didn't know before.Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this book, but it was just mediocre.
