I think the critics on IMDB has been especially harsh on this movie with an overall rating of only 5.3. I'd give it about a 6.2 for pure entertainment. Marks will be deducted for less than stellar dialogues, inconsistent acting from some of the characters and not great science. It is a fun movie to watch if you like action and special effects. This is an action movie, or at least it should be one, centred around science. Good action overall, especially with the special effects. However, I wish they'd just cut all the attempts at drama; it just led to some cheesy lines at th wrong time. If you can overlook these, it's not too bad a movie. Jim Sturgiss (the younger brother) was a little over the top in his 'anxious' looks. Got a little bit tiring after a while. I don't see why he'd be gasping for air in some of the scenes. The daughter - and there is only one - could not quite nail that role. Is she 13 or is she older. She looked like 13 but she acted like an adult. Either poor directing or over-acting on a young performer. Her lines were not typical of a kid either. Gerald Butler was not convincing as a scientist type. That role could have gone to somebody else who might look a little less 'blue collar'. (Apologies if I'm stereotyping casting a bit.) The best performer was Abbie Cornish. She's believable in her role. Great actor. I think she'd be getting more dramatic type roles and mentioned at the Oscars some day. Where do they find all these talents in Australia? My recommendations: watch this movies with friends or a casual family meetups. Not a date or romantic movie for sure.
