A frank look at what it meant to be Chinese or Japanese in America in 1930-1940 something. Although America has been billed as the "land of opportunity" -- it is clear that is not equally true for all as we follow these characters on their journey to find work, date inter-racially, rent apartments, and forge friendships where even the closest of friends can turn against one another when racial tensions explode after Pearl Harbor. Another great story from a wonderful writer -- pick up any of her books, you won't be disappointed.
