This is probably a great movie and a rather true story. I have taken Canadian History classes in a college here and in the 1800s life in Canada and in Quebec was hard. Read about the Asbestos strike, for example. There was no industry in Canada and American companies were invited here to do some projects and provide jobs for the locals in Quebec and Ontario. These American companies exploited the Canadian workers atrociously. They set up cheap dwellings for the workers and grocery stores, which the Companies owned and they made max. profits on all of it. During the Asbestos strike those American companies hired thugs to beat up or throw rocks at the Canadian workers who passed under some promontories; and they carried busloads of those American thugs to the dwellings of the workers, those armed men kicked in the doors to intimidate. But at the same time the Canadian authorities forbade the Canadian workers to come together in groups of more than 3 men. What has been done to the Irish immigrants too in the 1850s was also terrible. Thousands of them died or were killed by the military when they rebelled. They were called "squatters" and "violent paddy" because they had no jobs and no abodes. I listened to a 2 hour radio program at the French broadcast of Radio Canada and I put that info into my essay in college - and the teacher. obviously to kiss up to the English, marked down my essay and gave me a "C". OK. so, I did not see this movie yet, but I'm sure the commentators who praise it, are right.
