What do you do when you’re 12 years old, have an IQ of 180, play piano like a concert master, and your mom is making you crazy with her ambition for you? Well, to start with you hang out with your grandfather and build boomerangs. Then you thwart your mom’s plans every chance you get. Vitus was Switzerland’s official nominee for the 2006 Academy Award for Foreign Films. It stars real-life piano prodigy Teo Gheorghiu as a boy genius who grows weary and resentful of the burden of talent. While young Vitus kicks against his fate, the viewer is treated to breath-taking forays into keyboard virtuosity, including finger-poppers by Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Schumann, Ravel, and Scarlatti ... though truth to tell Vitus only really looks like he’s having fun when he does the boogie-woogie backtrack on his babysitter’s karaoke performance of Tina Turner’s “Nutbush City Limits”.
