I had read Pillars of the earth and A column of fire before this so I wonder if I set myself up for disappointment. But Ken Follett delivered a masterpiece again. The locale is Kingsbridge as in Pillars of the earth but 200 years later and with a different cast. The one thing I have learned with Follett's books is that every character important or otherwise and every word uttered by each of these, in every sentence is sure to play a part in the story. Thus, one has to read with intense concentration as one is gripped with excitement and wants to proceed. In this story the main two characters are Caris and Merthin and one wonders whether they will ever get together. Caris loves Merthin but she also has a passion for medicine and wants to follow this passion. As always I followed the intrigues of church politics, economic maneuvering, architecture, and justice with bated breath. A must read either as a stand alone or as part of the trilogy.
