Completely enjoyable on its face -- carried by a confident, spirited performance by Alicia Silverstone. But that's only a part of the appeal. Jane Austen fans will recognize a brilliant retelling of her 1815 novel, Emma. Rather than a more direct restatement, like From Prada to Nada (nee Sense and Sensibility), Clueless is much more imaginative and sophisticated in re-characterizing from the original to this film. And as Roger Ebert observed, its now-iconic teen dialogue -- "As If!" -- should be anthologized. All in all, a genius achievement by director/writer Amy Heckerling.
