This is the quintessential sci-fi film, Kubrick's masterpiece, and still amazingly fresh and vibrant (even the special effects) 40+ years after it was filmed. The expression of extraterrestrial intelligence as a black monolith (instead of humanoid creatures) was ingenious; and the juxtaposition of the monolith with human development is also ingenious and groundbreaking for its time. Especially poignant are the early scenes with proto-humans and the monolith, with the clear interpretation that the evolution of human intelligence derived from the extraterrestrial monolith...placed here by God or by some other highly intelligent life form. I've seen this film many times and the visual experience is always fresh...in fact this film is primarily a visual experience accompanied by music - the classics "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and "The Blue Danube" - which set the perfect mood for the visuals.
