Not as intense or profound as Grapes of Wrath, but quite enjoyable. The actual star is the town itself, Cannery Row in Monterrey, CA. As a good Fellini film, stuff simply happens. Lee Chong's magical store, Dora's etiquette whorehouse, a "residential" complex of abandoned boilers, a never-ending boat construction... and most importantly, the Palace Flophouse and the Marine Lab with Mack and Doc. I've known some Macks in my life... They simply have a sixth sense that can read perfectly human pulses and figure out the best response for every situation. I bet that if you're left stranded with Mack in the middle of the desert, after a day, Mack will show up again with some help and an iced Coke. You do want to meet Doc, do something nice for him, as just spend a couple of weeks on Cannery Row. Everything is brighter in California as they say.
