First rate historical fiction. The challenge with historical fiction is to create active & dynamic characters in the middle of the action but without perturbing the events. The author has managed to do exactly that by providing accounts of Italy prior to war with America, Poland prior to and during the German invasion, Berlin and certain German political & military figures prior to the war, London and certain British political & military figures prior to America's entry in the war, Moscow and certain Soviet political & military figures during the German invasion, and finally Washington and certain American political & military figures prior to Pearl Harbor. We get portraits of Roosevelt, Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, and some top American military figures. Aside from the history, there are subplots of family relationships & life.
