Grace is the only one who can discover the culprit, and she will do whatever it takes to save her family and find out who committed the crime that rocked their lives.  While unearthing truths about her life that may help her find answers, Grace learns more about everyone around her -- and finds she has courage she never knew she possessed.

Like many other commenters I went back to read this after reading Sister. As with Sister, this book is written from a bit different point of view. In Afterwards, a teenaged girl and her mother (Grace) are terribly injured in a fire. In the hospital the two meet up in out-of-body experiences. They can see and talk to each other but can't be seen or heard by others. Whilst keeping an eye on their bodies, they investigate the fire, now ruled as arson. The mystery is well-plotted and interesting but really takes a back seat to Grace's journey as she learns more about all the people around her. As she comes to finally see her little girl as an adult, her sister-in-law as a loving, caring person rather than a threat, her husband as a capable parent, and her daughter's boyfriend as loyal and steadfast, she also learns secrets that change her view of her best friend. The outcome is sad for some but ultimately hopeful for all that survive.

One of the best books I have read in years! Maybe ever!!
If you are a mother, or a daughter, or have a mother or daughter, you will never forget this book. Haunting and beautifully written.

Had read and loved Sisters and found that Afterwards, although very good, was a bit unwieldy and repetative, as it did indeed make its twists and turns...
Yet, my husband ( we read aloud together) loved it and would give it a five, and out of body books aren't usually his thing!

Intesting point of view.

A very good read, if your a parent this will grip you in a manner that shall effect you deeply. For those that are just looking for a nice mystery this is for you, a nice easy read.

I was worried I'd be disappointed with this, her second book, after loving 'Sister' so thoroughly, but 'Afterwards' is equally fantastic!

A very good read. I enjoyed this book I would recommend this book for all to read.

A comatose narrator and a hopelessly sad situation do not necessarily add up to a good read. Lupton's first novel, Sister, isn't exactly a barrel of laughs and the outcome is predictable but it's still an interesting read. Afterwards is just slow, ponderous and pointless.

A fabulous read that is impossible to put down! Terrific follow-up to her first successful novel, Sister. A nice blend of gripping suspense, and heartfelt, emotional impact. Keep the tissues handy for the ending! My only complaint is that I did not appreciate the many instances of profanity--completely unnecessary.
