Back in school I remember reading a short story set during the Irish Civl War called "The Sniper." Years later, I taught it in a class, which lead me to pick up a novel by the same author, Liam O'Flaherty. Like Joyce's "Ulysses" (but easier to read), this is the story of a journey, in this case the title informer who is fleeing those he betrayed. It was the basis for the John Ford film of the same name. You may also like Behan's "The Hostage" and the film "Odd Man Out."
