thought that this was a very inspirational film. well worth the watching

Well it is a stretch to call it a true story. Based on true events might be a better phrase. Otherwise not a bad film.

runs the entire gauntlet of emotions....
i know real people lead lives like this......real children grow up with events like this....
so dont care whether this particular story actually happened or not.

it is just not that inspiring, the acting is bad, the sets suck, and the story isn't well written, and it isn't true.

I rated this movie one star for one reason: it is marketed as "the inspiring true story," but it turns out it is half fiction. More on that in a minute. If the deceitfulness of this movie's "true story" claim was not a factor, I would have rated this 3.5 stars. It is slow, and the acting is poor, so it probably only deserves about 2 or 2.5 stars, but I give the extra because the story is a really enjoyable story and a powerful reminder of how difficult forgiveness is, but how important forgiveness is to allow people the chance to change. Even people we see as "monsters." Back to their lies about it being a true story: If they said this was merely inspired by the song or the events that lead to the release of the song, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But they market this as the inspiring true story, then proceed to put things in the movie that weren't even close to have happened. Sure, to tell a story 20 years in the making, and condense it to a feature film, you combine characters into one person, or condense three different events into one day - but you don't just outright make things up to make it feel more dramatic, not if you are going to call it a true story. [SPOILER ALERT] Just read this link to learn how much of the his "inspiring true story" was fake: http://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/i-can-only-imagine/

I was very impressed with this film. Dennis Quaid usually plays characters that are soooo well loved; but, this character is a totally different type of guy he usually plays. Well done. The lead, Michael J. Finley, is a bit over-dramatic sometimes, but this was his first film, and he is good as the lead singer of MercyMe. I didn't know this was a Christian movie when I took it off the shelf. It was a pleasure to watch. The was no killing or swearing, not that I'm against those types of films. But to enjoy a legit story without those things was very good. I really enjoyed Trace Adkins, the manager. All in all: a very good watch. Christian music has a strong following, although I've never pursued any concerts or events with artists who specialize in that genre.

Wow! Worth watching the special features too (including Dennis Quaid's country gospel video - if only for the story part ;->)

Every song, every work of art, has a story. In this case, this is the true story of the origin of a #1 hit inspirational song which leapt from the “Christian music” charts into those of several mainstream genres. The hand of God is seen guiding through it all, even in what seem to be irredeemable circumstances (and characters!). A great inspirational story of its own, though the acting was a little overdone in places. (For fans of non-pop music, the soundtrack is interesting: there’s that song of course, but all of the background cues seem to derive from its first three, by now iconic, notes.)

Inspirational. A movie that shows humans are fallible but can be positively changing with the help of the grace of Jesus.
