Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) is the independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who mysteriously vanished when she was a teen. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone. Against her father's final wishes, Lara leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island. Her mission will not be easy; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Against all odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit, she must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, she could earn the name "Tomb Raider".

If you can turn off your mind and watch this movie you will very likely enjoy it. Alicia Vikander is a better Lara Croft than Angelina Jolie and Jolie was very good. Jolie had much better writing as this movie is stupid beyond belief if you actually think as you watch. It starts with Lara poor and later implies that Lara is this way because she won't take her father's money because she would consider it as conceding that he is dead. While not spelled out, it seems clear Lara would have been a minor when dad disappeared so she wouldn't have really had a choice. But even if that is the case that is just not how humans work- You've just lost someone so you are going to cut everything out of your life that has to do with them? No, people seek comfort in the things they know, like their own home.

Next, rather than accessing the vast funds available to her Lara pawns a priceless necklace that is her one remaining memento of her mother. How does that make sense? Then, after tracing her father to Asia Lara is randomly attacked at the docks, AND IT IS RANDOM, the attackers never show back up and have no connections to the actual bad guys. Apparently the writers thought Lara pawning necklace and arriving in Asia was too much story line all at once and an action sequence was needed.

Frankly, with the exception of Alicia Vikander, the first Tomb Raider movie was better in pretty much every sense.

Boring, lame, uninspired. Not the worst I've seen, but far from the best.
Some good action scenes but as a whole, it is a very weak film. The new games are much more fun. If you're a fan of the series why waste time with the movie, and if you're just an action movie person there are far better offerings out there.

Was pleasantly surprised how FUN this movie is. Lots of non-stop action scenes and amazing visuals. Alicia Vikander definitely has a different take than Angelina's Jolie's iconic role, but she does well to be a different type of Lara Croft. Would recommend a watch as it's just good entertainment - not realistic but fun.

I can see the effort Alicia Vikander put into this role, but the action in this film is mediocre, and there are not enough puzzles. The dialogue also has no wit at all. The style of this film seems a bit outdated too; exploitive bad white guy, plus the Asian thugs on fishing boats seems a bit 90's.

My view may be biased as I have been playing the games from the beginning, so please take it with a grain of salt.

While fair to the concept of the Tomb Raider franchise, this film comes in as an underwhelming experience. The adaptation from the Tomb Raider 2013 video game is rather weak and calls upon many details revealed in the squeal game Rise of the Tomb Raider and the companion books and comics. Lara's journey through Yamatai was a showcase of how she became a survivor against heavy odds . Over the coarse of the film there was very little growth in that aspect.

Many key characters to the story are either non-existent or are downplayed to scene filler rolls. And many of the games QTE's are used almost so exactly as to call them re-renders for a remastered edition of the game.

If you are looking for a simple action film then this will probably foot the bill. But if you are an avid gamer you would get more enjoyment out of the games, novels, and comics.

8.5/10 as film by it's self 6.9/10 for the portrayal of the franchise.

Vikander underwhelms as Lara Croft. She has great strength obviously but her overall presence just sort of fades into the background. Overall the movie was okay. The villain was more of an ass than an evil psychopath.

Alicia Vikander's take as Lara, and her character's bond with her father, are what make this adaptation work. The movie has the elements you'd expect out of the franchise- global threatening ancient secrets, improbable escapes, preposterous hidden places, and situations that no one should rightfully be able to survive.

Watchable but the video game was way better, even though the producers of the movie were the makers of the video game.

I just like watching this movie because of Alicia's performance. I looked at the extras on the Blu-Ray and see she was always into this a child and trained extensively. She put allot of soul into her part. The overall movie was a nice fun watch. I have watched it twice already and put it on hold again. The hold-list speaks for itself and it has been circulating for quite a while.

You have to suspend belief with some of the action scenes, but that's typical of any big-budget action movie. Still, I was impressed. This adaptation makes the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies look like commercials for Axe body spray. (It helps that Alicia Vikander ACTUALLY KNOWS THE FRANCHISE - she said on Fallon that she played the games as a kid.)

I will definitely seek out the sequel, if there is one. (I imagine there will be. You don't have a cliffhanger like that unless a sequel is in the works.)
