Hawk is an inspirational novel that is written by Jennifer Dance, and was also nominated for a Red Maple award this year! Hawk is a teen boy who lived a very active life, until he was diagnosed with leukaemia, and his world was flipped upside down. One day he finds a fish hawk in a lake filled with toxins, and soon realizes his problems are very similar to this fish hawk. The book talks about Hawks journey in dealing with cancer, and how animals in the wild are living in toxic environments similar to him, especially due to oil spills. Overall, I would rate this book a 2 out of 5 stars because I feel it just wasn’t for me. The genre wasn’t as appealing to me as a mystery or fantasy fiction book would be, and I found the book quite dry. To me, there wasn’t really a clear climax, so the book just wasn’t as exciting for me. However if you think that enjoy nonfiction fiction, or science themed novels, you would definitely enjoy this.

I read this out loud to my 10 year old and 8 year old and we really enjoyed it. Lots of emotion. Good introduction to the tar sands.
