One evening after work hours, Jenny, a young doctor, allows the door buzzer at the small clinic where she works to go unanswered. It's only later that she learns that the person ringing was an unidentified African woman found dead shortly after by the side of a road. Consumed by the thought that she is to blame, Jenny embarks on an obsessive crusade to discover who the anonymous woman was and to see to it that she is not forgotten.

Shot in Seraing, the gritty suburb where the Dardenne brothers grew up, this is a story of guilt: how it can make us obsessed, how it eats us up, how it can only be assuaged by 'confession' and doing the right thing. Adèle Haenel is beyond praise as the dedicated young doctor who seeks the identity of a young prostitute who is found dead after she wasn't let into the clinic. Her relentless search brings forth anger and guilt from others involved in the girl's death, one of whom, played by Jérémie Renier, provides a superbly acted admission of guilt. Shot in the Dardennes' naturalistic style, with their trademark 'abrupt' editing, it is a fine film - though not, I think, on a par with their best (La Promesse, Rosetta, Le Fils, Le silence de Lorna). That said, it is still well worth seeing - and you are not going to forget Adèle Haenel.

A low key, who done-it, set in another country with spotty socialized medicine i.e. France. An interesting dynamic between the young female doctor and her patients who appear at least on the surface, to give her a certain respect most of us accord towards medical professionals. Her profession and experience gives her a superficial confidence that makes it seem reasonable to put her in some potentially dangerous situations while on her 'quest'. I watched this one straight through with nearly no sound, and English subtitles (while others slept,) which says a lot given it can be rather slow at times. The story sequencing is refreshingly realistic - and thus believable. Yeah, there was a bit of a red herring towards resolution, and not all subplots were tied up neatly. If you just gotta have that heart pounding Hollywood experience, with its happy ending, token or worse make-out scenes, and clean resolution, look elsewhere... Otherwise, this one's a gem.
