In March 2007, two academics from an Australian university began a campaign to stop the work of a PhD student. They claimed the students project, a TV series pilot, was &́#x80;œamoral trash&́#x80; that &́#x80;œmocked and ridiculed&́#x80; the disabled. Their campaign to stop the project spread to the corners of the globe, leading to threats, student protests and outraged blogs. They asked for government agencies, ministers, the Human Rights Commission, and the Adult Guardian to intervene. The PhD student, filmmaker Michael Noonan, became the embodiment of exploitation and moral decrepitude. He was &́#x80;œshamed&́#x80; off campus, condemned on the blogosphere and assaulted by fellow students for a &́#x80;œdistressing&́#x80; work they had seen nothing of. His reputation in tatters and his PhD on the brink of collapse, Noonan grew determined to fight the academics campaign and show the world what his work was really about. The ensuing battle became one of Australias most bitter and expensive academic controversies... and almost set a disturbing precedent for filmmakers and researchers everywhere.
