"Months before publication, William R. Forstchen's One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. Hundreds of thousands of people have read the tale. One Year After is the thrilling follow-up to that smash hit. The story picks up a year after One Second After ends, two years since the detonation of nuclear weapons above the United States brought America to its knees. After suffering starvation, war, and countless deaths, the survivors of Black Mountain, North Carolina, are beginning to piece back together the technologies they had once taken for granted: electricity, radio communications, and medications. They cling to the hope that a new national government is finally emerging. Then comes word that most of the young men and women of the community are to be drafted into an "Army of National Recovery" and sent to trouble spots hundreds of miles away. When town administrator John Matherson protests the draft, he's offered a deal: leave Black Mountain and enter national service, and the draft will be reduced. But the brutal suppression of a neighboring community under its new federal administrator and the troops accompanying him suggests that all is not as it should be with this burgeoning government."--

When I read the first book, "One Second After," I couldn't put that book down! I was happy when the this book finally arrived. As true to the first book, "One Year After" was just as wonderful. I again couldn't put it down as I needed to know what would happen next? Imagine how I felt when I learned that the author is working on the third book! I can't wait for that one to come out. These books should be read be everyone, not just recommended. I have learned many things in my life time, many just to have the knowledge just in case something like this ever did happen. The greatest of all my knowledge and survival... wasn't anything I learned in school. The reason I'm alive today, the reason I survived so many tragedies, was due to what I was taught by my tribe and the elders. Everything else I've learned was just icing on the cake. Well done author!!!

I got about half way through this book and then just found I couldn't bring myself to read it anymore. I found the story to be slow and tedious without really any further character development.
Basically it amounts to the same story as the first book - you better pray that a retired army officer lives in your neighbourhood during a disaster - or else. The constant overtone of pro-military service personal and the inherit corruption of public servants was just too simplistic.

This sequel did not disappoint. It made me has made me even more vigilant to watch people & their motives. We have gotten into complacency in America that we can just trust people, but as this author brings out, we must test the fruit of their actions before we trust. I did not expect this twist in the story & again it was excellently written.

Every group has an agenda. Left, right, middle Yada,Yada. Much sci fi these days seems politically motivated. Wearying.

Right-wing political agenda gets in the way of the plot and characterization. A disappointing effort.

This book is heavy on military action and defending territory. Still some good characters but not really what I was expecting.
