After her mother's suicide, fifteen year-old Lane Roanoke came to live with her grandparents and fireball cousin, Allegra, on their vast estate in rural Kansas. Lane knew little of her mother's mysterious family, but she quickly embraced life as one of the rich and beautiful Roanoke girls. But when she discovered the dark truth at the heart of the family, she ran... fast and far away. Eleven years later, Lane is adrift in Los Angeles when her grandfather calls to tell her Allegra has gone missing. Did she run too? Or something worse? Unable to resist his pleas, Lane returns to help search, and to ease her guilt at having left Allegra behind. Her homecoming may mean a second chance with the boyfriend whose heart she broke that long ago summer. But it also means facing the devastating secret that made her flee, one she may not be strong enough to run from again.

Ewww. Just ewww. I find it hard to believe that a "family secret" like that would be kept for so many years and no one would do anything about it. In fact, at least two characters enabled the family to keep it going. And to imply that many of the females wanted the situation to continue - it's just icky.

There’s a lot of love in this story. Love that’s a lot like functional alcoholism. It seems to work on the surface, but over time it’s just not sustainable. Despite the early reveal of the family secret The Roanoke Girls compels to the very end.

Wow! This was an emotionally charged book written about a very taboo subject. I have to just say that I LOVED this book! Somehow this book manages to his every emotion. This is a coming of age, dark and twisted, powerful story of love. It hit every emotion cover to cover.

Every character in this book has some sort of flaw. A damage done to them that has scared them and made them even more interesting. There wasn't a single character that didn't fascinate me.

The Roanoke Secret is revealed pretty early on. It isn't hard to figure it out, yet it isn't a secret that is flat out revealed. You know what the secret is yet the story keeps going. This books switched back and forth between present day and the summer of secrets. I finished this book in about 3 days.

There is no BIG REVEAL at the end of this twisted, messy story. Rather, all the pieces seem to fall into place letting the reader see the entire picture all at once instead of bits and pieces. The end of the story left my mouth hanging open in awe.

I highly recommend this. I am so thankful for Netgalley and Crown Publishing for allowing me a copy to read and review!

Wow. This was an incredibly disturbing yet unputdownable book. I was immediately drawn into the story thanks to the complicated characters, the atmospheric setting, and the author's engaging writing style. Loved this one!

This was a disturbing story line, but I couldn't stop reading this to find out everything about this strange family. Not for everyone, but found it to be a solid read.

Disturbing and compelling, this dark fiction highlights the long-term, rippling effect a buried secret can have on a family.

Somber theme dominates the story of this but not much. Kept me interested half-way through the book, but it dissolved at the end. Touchy and important subject but as a psychological thriller fan I was expecting more. Not enough to recommend.

This book was amazing. Well written, handled sensitive (translate taboo/disturbing) storylines well (if you followed it through) and had realistically flawed characters. I hoped I knew where it was going but had my doubts more than once which kept me hooked. If you can't handle that ugly situations are a part of our world then you probably shouldn't read this one.

Well this book won't be for everyone as the subject is taboo. But boy, it is well written and kept me turning the pages. A dark and twisty plot, a good cast of of really messed up characters, unsettling secrets of a disturbing family, and the final Roanoke girl who tries to end the cycle. I would recommend this to those who liked All the Ugly and Wonderful Things.

I had to stop reading this book. I won't ruin it by revealing the so-called secret but I abhor when authors take an awful situation and try to make it "streamline" so that others begin to accept it as normal. This is the second book in a row with the "now and then" theme without specific references and I found it tiresome. I'll read just about anything as long as it has a great story and engaging characters but this was simply too dark to read as a novel. The subject matter belongs on the Dr. Phil show if you are going to use it to shock or worse, entertain.
