A Chinese film spoken in Chinese with English subtitles.

A well made film, somewhat slow but showing the harsh life during and after the cultural revolution and what occurs if you spoke out in dissent. A tragic and very sad film. It grinds on with the daily life of a professor's family and what happens when he returns after being "re-educated and rehabilitated" while being in prison.

This film by Chinese director Zhang Yi Mou is a far cry from his recent splashy but hollow costume dramas. It is a more serious film dealing with the trauma of a family during and after the Cultural Revolution. If nothing else, it gives me a glimpse of what life was like during that period. And life was very, very harsh then. A reasonably good watch for me.

Very good movie with a lot of emotions, portrayed harsh reality of tough life, love , family and lost.

Zhang Yimou's best in years after all those costume/martial art spectacles. Though amnesia (via concussion, or Alzheimer) theme is done to death in the West, there's still something fresh here: using all their wile, an exiled father and estranged daughter team up to evoke the memories of the woman they love. No easy solution or fairy ending here, yet... Gong Li is simply amazing as the rest of the cast.

This is a 2014 Chinese historical drama directed by Zhang Yimou, based on the novel:"The Criminal Lu Yanshi (陆犯焉识; 陸犯焉識)" written by novelist Geling Yan.
Lu Yanshi was a professor before being sent to the labor camp during the Cultural Revolution.
He escaped from the labor camp in Xining to meet his long-missed wife Feng Wanyu and daughter Dandan.
However, the police were already waiting outside the house to arrest him.
It is one of the profoundly heart-wrenching and heartbreaking tragedies the Cultural Revolution had caused in China.

Please tell me, why did he do it? What did you do to him?

What about me? Did you think about me?
-Since you were young, I've always put you first. But this time I must think of your father.

The "Dj vu" theory suggests that, through imagination, the human brain can create fictional memories.
When encountering similar moments in real life, the patient can subconsciously activate the fictional memories and make them seem real.
-For example?
For example... Places you have lived, familiar locations, movies you have seen, music you have listened to, letters, books, old photos... They may all be helpful.
I just don't get it. She forgets everything, but remembers all my faults.
If this goes on any longer, to her I'll eventually become nothing more than a letter reader.

He's been gone for so long. When will you release him? Give me a date. It's just me and my child. Day in and day out we wait for him. We want him back for the New Year! Tell me! When will he be released? How much longer do we have to wait? Tell me! Answer me! When will he get out? ...
