More than forty years ago, Mario Puzo wrote his iconic portrait of the Mafia underworld as told through the fictional first family of American crime, the Corleones. The leader, Vito Corleone, is the Godfather. He is a benevolent despot who stops at nothing to gain and hold power. His command post is a fortress on Long Island from which he presides over a vast underground empire that includes the rackets, gambling, bookmaking, and unions.

This was an excellent audiobook. It is nearly impossible to resist comparison to the film, given its cultural ubiquity, but I found the book to be very enjoyable and perhaps a bit easier to follow after having seen the movie. The narration by Joe Mantagne was very good, with the exception that he did not do very much by way of different voices. Some of his accents need work. But on the whole, I strongly recommend listening to this audiobook.
