I wasn't a fan of the narration. However, I tried to hear beyond the intonations and heard this important story.
It focuses on a small town, highlighting the difficulties of a rape charge and trial. By focusing on a microcosm of the issue within a college community, Krakauer is able to show the issues within the Justice system, which would also be apparent in the larger context globally.

Jon Krakauer looked at the women & their stories, the entitlement of athletic males, the ramifications of telling one's story. It's frustrating to be shown how difficult this is for the victims.
All in all, a very good look at rape, the justice system, the entitlement issue, the unheard voices of the women and how hard it is to fight for that voice.

Another detailed, researched tale by a gifted writer. Until one reads about this destructive event it's easy to shrug it off as happening to others... At times I wanted to move along due to the repetition of horrendous reliving. Now I'm curious how the people have moved on in their lives. Having known a woman so terrorized by a former husband & knowing she rarely let her guard down for 25+ years I have some understanding of the damage that remains.

Good book.

I'm a big Jon Krakauer fan--his books are well-reported and super readable. I found the reporting in this book to be less complex than his previous work--given his scope, this probably would have made a great long-form article. That said, I appreciate Krakauer's work toward reshaping our culture's view of rape by re-centering the discussion on the perpetrator's crime--and more importantly, how our criminal justice system protects those perpetrators--rather than the historical focus on the victim's behavior. An important critical look at our cultural assumptions about rape and rapists.
