After a lengthy introduction of the 3 main characters and their backgrounds, the author finally gets down to the plot of the story. Two spies - one Israeli and the other English - are after an Irish bombmaker while the bombmaker is after the two spies. Each wants the other dead for revenge purposes as people close to each died as a result of their opponent. It's a game of cat and mouse with a lot of surveillance and near misses. The beginning is dramatic and catches the reader's interest, but it takes a while for the author to point out the connections between that event and the revenge that each character is seeking. Expect characters to fly in and out of many European cities on this chase. Expect the involvement of Russian defectors, Russian spies, and even Iranian double spies, each getting involved, again, to get a revenge of their own. The plot thus seems very complex and wide ranging with many reasons for the characters' actions. Perhaps that is Silva's trademark. As the 3 main characters get closer to exacting their revenge, the tension in the story increases with a dramatic shoot-out. After 475 pages, do the characters finally achieve their goal? I certainly hope that this type of plot is not a reflection of how nations carry out their espionage.

Another thrilling Gabriel Allon tale which incudes another pairing with the English assassin, Christopher Keller. The historical vein now stretches into Northern Ireland and Silva handles it with his effortless style and panache.

Too many characters to keep track of and too much detail regarding street names, vicinities, etc.

Daniel Silva’s The English Spy grabs you immediately. Though it is the 15th book in the Gabriel Allon series, do not hesitate picking up this book as your introduction to Gabariel Allon. Silva provides each character’s history and their connection to each other by illustrating incidences and stituations leaving the reader with strong visual impressions. Silva is on the same par as John le Carre- the spy riddle master.

this is a bridge for Gabriel's career to the spy head office. I enjoyed the read, wish the book was a bit longer to fill out the final revenge scenes. I agree with pw1040 below. The references to current political events makes the story line that much more gripping.

Not one of Siva's best works. The ending was disappointing.

Michael Connelly just gets better and better.

Although primarily a Harry Bosch story, Harry does interact with Mickey Haller as he moves from police detective to private detective, working for, you guessed it, Mickey.

We struggle as Harry struggles with working for the other side, his thoughts about the client's innocence as well as the development of his personal life.

A good read -- don't miss it!

I'm a big fan of Silva and his Allon and Keller characters. However, I don't think this was one of his best efforts. The book was entertaining but the plot felt unfocused and not as well thought-out as that of previous books
