In January of 2010 the proprietor of the Domaine de la Romanйe-Conti, producer of the world's most expensive and exquisite wines, was threatened that his priceless vines would be destroyed by poison unless he paid a one million euro ransom. He believed it was a sick joke, which proved a fatal miscalculation. The sinister story uncovered by journalist Maximillian Potter would lead to a sting operation by some of France's top detectives.

The promise, according to the subtitle "The True Story of the Plot to Poison the World's Greatest Wine," is really just the thread that holds the book together while the author digresses into diverse stories related to wine. Some of the digressions, for example a fairly detailed history of Madame de Pompadour, wander rather off topic. Nonetheless, they are all interesting. All in all, a good read despite the need for a tighter editing.

I couldn't disagree more with the two reviewers below. This is an excellent book that will appeal to both oenophiles and fans of the true crime genre. And unlike a lot of other books that deal with wine, writing in a narrative nonfiction style is a much better way to learn about the Burgundy region and wine in general. As opposed to memorizing a bunch of random facts from a Wine for Dummies, you'll absorb much more by reading Potter's book, who is not a wine snob and has no dog in this fight. The story about the shocking crime and why attacking DRC is the equivalent of attacking French culture as a whole will show you how important wine is to France's collective heritage. If you enjoyed Devil in the White City or The Billionaire's Vinegar, you'll definitely like Shadows in the Vineyard.

Average story that could have been told in a two or three page magazine story.

Dull & boring treatment of a romantic, earthy subject.
