Cornwell gives a good look at the politics and intrigues of the time. But in the end the battle scenes come down to one gory limb being severed, or a head bashed in, it gets tedious.
I've listened to quite a few Bernard Cornwell audiobooks, and Jack Hawkins is not my favourite reader - he really doesn't do voices, which can make it hard to differentiate between characters. But other than that, a solid performance. And of course - you can't go wrong with Bernard Cornwell if you like swords and detailed battle scenes. Which I do.
