'Memories of my Melancholy Whores' introduces us to a totally new genre of García Márquez's writing. It is a fairy tale for the aged - a story that celebrates the belated discovery of amorous passion in old age.

This novel follows an elderly protagonist's life, with glimpses into his 90 years of being without it becoming stale, even though he is an aristocratic, grumpy old man - code for: Marquez's formulaic genre. From a romantic viewpoint, I like that the take away message is that "it is never too late to learn to love or even discover meaning in one's life". The novel reads like a prose at times with beautiful one liners written so eloquently that you can't help but re-read and then re-read the lines again. Regardless of having similarities to "Love in the Time of Cholera", it is a quick read eqipped with an aging man's (worthwhile-ish) epiphanies.

I think I picked this up just because it had "whores" in the title. Just kidding. Readers looking for a sexy read will instead find an autmumnal, bittersweet, graceful tale of a 90 year old man's unlikely relationship with a teenage prostitute. If the plot sounds distasteful, it's redeemed by Marquez's rich, textured writing and the wry, aristocratic protagonist. It doesn't break new ground for him, but it is a sensual, lyrical, slim novel that is a good introduction to the master's work.

another mystical masterpiece. you wonder how you can like someone who does the things the main character does, but you do and he grows throughout the book
