"The Firelight Girls is a story of three generations of women and men whose lives are pieced back together when they return to the place that made them who they are, a summer camp on Lake Wenatchee in Washington State. Seventy year old Ethel is directionless after losing Haddie, the love of her life, to a heart-attack. Camp was where they met way back in the fifties, and they made their home down the shore from camp. Once a vibrant, capable camp counselor, Shannon has just had her heart shattered by the loss of her job. Ruby, estranged from Ethel for fifty years, has been living with a secret for almost as long. Finally, there is Amber, a homeless teen who has been hiding out in one of the cabins, hoping that no one at school will catch on to her plight. When they learn that the camp's future is in jeopardy, Ethel and Ruby send out the alarm, reuniting campers and staff to save the place that was so instrumental in all of their lives. A story of enduring friendship and romance, The Embers is about what has been lost and what can still be created"--
"The summers you spend at summer camp are indelibly etched on your heart. But what happens when the camp you love is about to close? Can you ever really say goodbye to the place that made you who you are? These are the questions that plagues Ethel, the seventy-year-old former camp director who is nursing a broken heart after losing the love of her life as she now faces the impending closure of the camp on Lake Wenatchee that she called home. It's also a question that inspires change in forty-year-old Shannon, who spent the summers of her youth as a vibrant, capable camp counselor and is now directionless after watching her career implode. And there's Laura, who has lost all intimacy with her husband and doesn't know if she can save what seems to be gone forever. Finally, Ruby, who betrayed Ethel years ago and hasn't spoken to her since, hopes this will be her chance to amke amends. When the four women learn that a homeless teen has been hiding at camp, they realize camp is something much more immediate for all: survival. And so the three generations of women search for a way to save the place that saved them all, finding in the process a way back to themselves and each other in The Firelight Girls, Kaya McLaren's novel of love and loss, heartbreak and healing. I look forward to reading this book. The Camp Fire camp I grew up with and managed for the last 30 years is being sold. Since programming has become dormant, our national office revoked our charter. I'm hoping to find some ideas.

Camp Firelight is a permanent summer camp for girls ages 5 through high school, with older girls coming back as counselors and a couple, like Ethel, even becoming the director of camp. Located on Lake Wenatchee in Washington state, Camp Firelight was the home of the heart and spirit of some of the girls. Unfortunately, the well that supplied safe water to the camp ran dry, twice in two years. There was not enough money to drill a new well and the governing board of the camp decided it was time to stop, and to sell the camp. Ethel, who had been retired from being the camp director for around 10 years, and who lived on Lake Wenatchee only a couple of miles from the camp, sent a missive to camp alumnae, informing them of this decision and inviting them to come help clean up the camp for sale and to say goodbye. This novel is about the week or so that Ethel and some of the women are at camp. A teenager (Amber) also becomes part of the story even though she never attended this camp. This is a story about love, fortitude, courage, friendship, and making clear choices.
