Dec 30 2016, I found this a little slow. Cambodia doesn't look like a place that I'd want to live in. However, to each his/her own! I guess it had a happy ending. One thing I've learned about being a parent.....you can't tell your kids what to do....they have their own minds, and their happiness is in their own hands! I guess that's the way it should be.

It's a shame that you do not have the scope to see what this film is showing us. It's not an original story by any means but that never should matter, it's how the story is said. For you to say that this is "incredibly pointless" you must have something to back it up with (besides a negative re-telling of the plot). Have you lived in Cambodia? Or any Asian country or speak the language? Have you ever loved someone from the opposite end of your financial spectrum? Have you ever loved an Asian? I bet the answer is negative on all counts and therefor your insults of this film amount to nothing! Try reading a professional film critic and see how they write about a film they did not like. If you were a policeman I bet you would take someone to trial without any evidence...just because you didn't like the person?

Boy doesn't have much experience with girls. Boy goes on vacation to Cambodia. Boy has cute, young, seemingly fragile (but very experienced and very cunning) prostitute attach herself to him. Boy falls hook, line, and sinker for the much practiced and utterly obvious manipulations of prostitute - and the sex of course. Boy is completely infatuated with prostitute. Boy moves in with prostitute for the remainder of his vacation. Boy gives all his money to prostitute. Boy is asked to give money (and other things) to family members of prostitute. Boy eventually has to return home without prostitute. Boy continues sending money to prostitute. (Prostitute, meanwhile, continues to work her con on other tourists, even though she led boy to believe she'd stop "working" if boy supported her.) Boy feels even more compelled to help when prostitute reveals she has HIV. Boy is finally reeled in completely when prostitute turns up the heat in a last ditch effort (it's too hard to keep working her charms on him with only the occasional, language barrier riddled contact - and no sex), by accusing him of abandoning her just like "all the others". Boy, as hoped, does the only thing he hasn't already. Boy returns to Cambodia. Boy marries prostitute.

This is the classic tale of third world bar girl meets gullible first world tourist. Except for the marrying part. Most tourists realize they're being manipulated long before then. Even if they do continue sending money.

So, what happens next?

Boy is compelled to exploit his now ex-prostitute wife's past with this incredibly pointless movie (or is it a warning to others?) because he desperately needs some return on his output if he's ever going to be able to support himself, his new wife, their quickly resulting child (followed by a second one), and ALL of his wife's ever-needy, ever-greedy extended Cambodian family members (who were, of course, always part of the package if prostitute ever snagged a "rich" foreigner).

This movie should have been called "Cambodian Prostitute Hits Foreigner Jackpot" or "Little Girls of Cambodia Take Note", or maybe even "All The Guys in This Movie Are TOTAL Jerks to Women - Except Me."

But I'd be hard pressed to call this tale of manipulation and usury a "love" story.
