I was dismayed to read a section of the text describing the role of the Assembly of First Nations. First, there was no mention of hereditary chiefs or Indigenous government institutions pre-contact. Second, it ignored that band councils are a colonial imposition of the Indian Act. Third, it stated that the big question currently occupying the time of the AFN is how to profit from the exploitation of resources on reserve. This is the preoccupation of the federal government - First Nations are defending their territories from exploitation of resources and are preoccupied with issues of child apprehension, sovereignty, clean water, MMIW and men, etc. This was just a giant blind spot for the text and the obviously colonial perspective presented here risks perpetuating misinformation. I would recommend that this text be removed from HPL's catalogue. I will also be contacting the publisher.
