Rosalind Bengal, half Scottish, half Indian, arrives in Bombay on the eve of the monsoon to find her sister Miranda in a suspicious and vulnerable situation. Miranda is the second wife of moviemaker Prosper Sharma, whose first wife, Maya, met a tragic end. There have recently been murders in Bombay's community of hijras--transsexual prostitutes--and Rosalind wonders whether Prosper may be involved. Rosalind also has some dark secrets of her own ... it's no accident that these principal players are named after the ill-fated family in Shakespeare's The tempest. This novel offers a piercing view into the hidden worlds of gangsters, artists, con men, transvestites, and serial killers, and the Bombay movie industry.
