Adam Austin hasn't spoken to his brother in years. When they were teenagers, their sister was abducted and murdered, and their devastated family never recovered. Now Adam keeps to himself, scraping by as a bail bondsman, working so close to the town's criminal fringes that he sometimes seems a part of them.

Kent Austin is the beloved coach of the local high school football team, a religious man and hero in the community. After years of near misses, Kent's team has a shot at the state championship, a welcome point of pride in a town that has had its share of hardships.

Just before playoffs begin, the town and the team are thrown into shock when horrifically, impossibly, another teenage girl is found murdered. As details emerge that connect the crime to the Austin brothers, the two must confront their buried rage and grief-and unite to stop a killer.

Michael Koryta, widely hailed as one of the most exciting young thriller authors at work today, has written his greatest novel ever-an emotionally harrowing, unstoppably suspenseful novel that Donald Ray Pollock has called "one of the sharpest and superbly plotted crime novels I've read in my life."

Revenge story with lots of angst. Sister killed as a teenager, years later another girl killed. One brother sets out to kill the killer, the other brother tries to forgive. Aside from descriptions of past and present football games this is dreadfully slow moving.

Fabulous. I was losing interest in this author, but this one brought me back.

It was an interesting book. However, the recounting of football games was quite tiresome. It had little to do with story-line except for Coach and one of the players.

A decent read with good character development, but a poor conclusion. There could have been a lot more depth to the book and the story.

Wow! What a great novel. Without a doubt one of the best thrillers this reader has encountered this year.

I'm becoming a great fan of Koryta. This was well-executed and kept me reading into the night. I will explore some of his earlier works now.

Secrets....everybody has them. Some are painful, some are self-serving & some are deadly. This is the story of 2 brothers long separated by a tragedy in their youth who have chosen different paths but are never actually that far apart. Someone is playing a horrible game to test their relationship, loyalty & faith. This is a thriller but as much psychological as physical. At times it's like watching a car crash through your fingers but you can't stop reading til you discover the identity of the madman & who will walk away.
