"It’s 1837 and Lieutenant Marc Edwards of His Majesty’s 24th Regiment of Foot is at his post in Toronto, Upper Canada. This third novel in Don Gutteridge’s terrific historical series is the best thus far, and that’s saying a lot, because Gutteridge knows his history and how to build and pace a mystery novel.

The times are rocky in Toronto. The locals are restive and it appears that the troops will go into action soon. Meanwhile, there’s romance and a travelling theatre troupe to amuse. But when a member of the cast is murdered and Edwards’s friend is found standing over the body, no one is smiling. Then an investigation shows that the actors may have been arms smugglers. It appears that the Americans support the local radicals. Was this murder for passion or politics? Gutteridge weaves his tale perfectly, with believable characters and perfect scene-setting."
