“Wake” by Lisa McMann is the first book in her trilogy. Janie, the main character, has an extraordinary ability that sucks her into other people’s dreams. Everything is going well until she sees herself in another person’s dream. While reading this book, I was a bit confused about who the audience was. The descriptions aren’t as detailed as most young adult books are, but the themes are too mature for younger audiences. The plot was very interesting, but the writing style takes some time to get used to. The writing style is unique because the author writes in 3rd person and in the present tense, which is uncommon. The book wasn’t very descriptive, and some events were described in just a few sentences. The chemistry between Janie and Cabel is well shown throughout the book. The author makes Janie’s personality shine through. I would recommend this book to people who want to explore a different writing style or don’t mind unique styles like this one. The book kept me engaged for the most part, and the only issue was the writing style. I’d give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. @India_ink of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

This book is really good. The concept is extremely clever, unlike anything I read before. Worth your time if you're looking for a good, one-of-a-kind novel. This is the first book in a trilogy (Wake, Fade, Gone). Funny, it's not the first book I've read called "Wake". I liked the one by Amanda Hocking MUCH more. This is a 3 1/2 star book for me.

This was such a good book! It sucks you in as soon as you start, never really slowing down and always taking turns you don't expect. I read it in two days, it's pretty easy to get through. The writing is very powerful, I had the rare experience of crying during one particularly strong scene... Overall a highly reccomended book!!

An ok book, a little slow paced and not the writing style that I could get into or maybe am just not used to I guess, but not bad. I liked it enough in the long run that I will probably go on to read the next one.

Janie Hannagan has a gift -- or rather a curse -- for being sucked into other people's dreams whenever they're sleeping nearby. She is witness to funny things; strange things; typical, boring things; and, in one instance, something so disturbing she won't even drive on Waverly Road any more. With the help of resident hottie Cabel Strumheller, Janie must discover whose terrifying dream she beheld, and what is wrong with her that she was able to see it in the first place.

Sep 18, 2009

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant....

That was the Goth stage, where I decided I'd never get the girl of my dreams because of my scars. Not to mention the hairstyle. (pause) But then she slammed a door handle into my gut. And when a girl does that to a boy, it means she likes him.
