From the description, this is a romantic coming of age story and who's the biological father mystery. Lucy's leisurely journey, quest among the Italian countryside with eccentric characters, was quite satisfactory in mho.

I enjoyed rewatching this as much or more than my first viewing. It is not so much the plot, but the terrific. A young Liv Tyler is luminously awkward as a 19 year old who is still a virgin (though nobody knows this), Jeremy Irons is charming as a dying writer, but the real star is the Tuscan hill country, bathed in soft warm sun, beautifully shot, gently pulsing through and around the edges of the people and the sculpture. You can see why some Brits who could came to these hills in the novels of Forster, Huxley, and others. Not so much a story, as a pointillist tone poem of exuberant youth, creative energy, decadent or wise maturity, and dignified dying. Other characters are strongly played, e.g. the sculptor and his wife, but if you want a simple, clear story with obvious conflict and flashy action leading to expected resolution, the meandering script may try your patience. Well worth watching if you want to join creative ex-pats in Tuscany stealing beauty.

Leisurely evocation of Italian countryside with its diverse personalities, their loves and relationships into which an initially naive 19yr old American girl in search of love is parachuted. Fiennes is riveting as usual as are all the cast. Wonderful!

Meanwhile, not everything is perfect as it seemed:

Diana: I want to go home.
Ian: This is home.
Diana: Not really.
Ian: This is where Daisy was born.
Diana: I don't want to die here. I want to die where I belong.
Ian: You're upset about Alex. And ... moving is not going to change that.
Diana: I'm getting tired of taking care of people. I want to go back. I want to go back ... where it's ... gray ... damp ... and the milk goes off. I feel ... I'm not ... this anymore

Miranda: I decided I had to get rid of it one summer ... before I went back to school.
Richard (Miranda's boyfriend): Darling ... are you speaking of life before me?
Miranda: I ended up doing it with the same guy ... my best friend did it with. He was the local ... deflowerer.

They're wonderful, wonderful friends. They just ... They just have this habit of disappearing.
