An opera within an opera, I loved this movie. Very stylized acting and narrative conveys the message clearly and you get carried away by the story, get to know the characters very well, each of whom is a template of a type but so sympathetic and engaging. Excellent, we are beginning to enjoy Japanese movies now we have got used to them, they are very real and do not glorify and sensationalize sex and violence as Western movies often do. There is no distraction from the very human message of joy and suffering, the dilemmas and problems and overcoming character displayed by the protagonists pull you right in. Wonderful!

This was good, a bit slow at times but still worth while.

a very moving tale of alienation and reconnection between 2 fathers and 2 sons. one reviewer called this film an odyssey of love - exactly! beautiful landscapes in Yunnan Province.
