This one has been on my to-read list for a couple of years now, and I'm glad I finally picked it up. It hits right in the sweet spot of mysteries I enjoy: historical, a bit of romantic & interpersonal drama, and not too grisly. It's a bit darker than I usually like my mysteries, because I'm a wimp, but not to such an extreme that I couldn't enjoy it, and I thought this was pretty hard to put down. Hand this one to fans of Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series and Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily books.

Slow and overwrought, I struggled to get through this book. While I've enjoyed many other mysteries set in Georgian, Regency, Victorian, and other time periods, I kept putting this one down. It wasn't at all the fast paced page turner promised by the blurbs and reviews. The premise doesn't quite make sense. And despite the fact that it takes place in 1811, Sebastian, the protagonist, must have had a very speedy form of transport to zip him around London so quickly. Not recommended.

I picked this up after I finished Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey mysteries, and loved it. This series is a little darker and a little less romantic, but there's still plenty of historical angst mixed in with the mystery.

And because she loved him so much, because she would always love him, she forced herself to say what needed to be said, although the worse tore open every old bleeding wound she'd hidden away so deep within her.
