Maybe i'm missing a whole level of nuance here, but i found the storyline a fairly typical quest theme (fight the Evil Baddie, solve the puzzles/answer the riddles and save the day, or Mom, etc.). But then i've found Neil Gaiman overrated (poor man- a very good writer but so overpraised that, like Gene Wolfe, he disappoints).
The real attraction to this movie is the look, the setting, its world. You may not like it (it took me a second viewing before i warmed to it), but it has more originality in its toenails than a decade of american fantasy/science-fiction cg films. Brits are more creative than americans? I doubt that, but you can make films in the UK that the corporate overlords in America wouldn't even consider. And culture winds up being lowest/dumbest-common-denominator-ism.
Check it out! A caution: you're probably so conditioned by the american slick look that you'll sneer at the deliberate naif look of this film (as i've seen another reviewer here do).

I wanted to love this because I'm such a fan of all those involved, but it just came across as rather soulless. And weird for the sake of being weird.

A judgement of Mirrormask mostly depends on the taste. If you like exotic and unnatural effects, and a somewhat dark and eerie story, then you should definately take this out. I loved it.

I watched this twice and that is enough for now. Nice teen story. Great CG but a bit on the dark side.

This film was a real treat for the eyes. I really enjoyed it a lot. The story was at times hard to follow - I had to rewind and replay a few scenes - but well worth the momentary confusion in the end. The combination of Neil Gaiman's story, Dave McKean's visuals and direction, and the Jim Henson Company's puppetry mastery made for a wonderfully eclectic tale.

Visually stunning.

Beautiful visually, but the story line was hard to follow and a little slow.
