If I had to use a movie title to explain how I feel about this series, I'd go with "He's Just Not That Into You", or whatever it was called. The point is that, while it's a fairly decent series, the characters aren't very exciting, and the action isn't very exciting either. (Another reviewer calls the school the kids attend "Bland Academy".)
Along with the oft-referenced comparisons to Harry Potter, this particular book seems to add a bit of Narnia or some other kids fantasy series, with a sometimes-invisible white horse and a trip to a castle of mirrors (that doesn't really seem to help the story at all, as far as I can see).
