The Great Escape was one of our favorite movies as kids (Steve McQueen and his baseball!) I never knew it was based on a true event. This is a Nova special that has archaeologists digging in Germany excavating one of the original tunnels. Three elderly men appear, they were real escapees from the Nazi POW camp. Great to hear their views and perspectives. They provide information about how the tunnels were dug, how they set up electricity in the tunnels, how the escape occurred. Their perspective really adds to the fictional movie version and you have to marvel at their ingenuity and perseverance during their captivity. Great insider info for those of us who love the movie.

This is a 60-minute documentary about the most infamous prison break during the World War II.
Each tunnel was outfitted with railways, electric lights, and underground air pumps all under the nose of the German guards.
The detainees were planning to escape on the moonless night of March 24, 1944.
Unfortunately, however, a guard spotted one of the detainees as he exited the tunnel beyond the perimeter fence.
Fifty men out of 76 prisoners who made their escape were captured and shot dead.
Today, a truly historic tunnel is buried deep below the surface of the tranquil countryside of what was the high-security POW camp called "Stalag Luft III."
As heavy equipment removes treacherous sand soil, dramatic recreations and caqndid recollections from the veterans offer stunning details about the prisoners' ingenious and ambitious tunneling plans, and retells the tragic story of the many of the escapees.
It is a gripping, fascinating and thrilling documentary.
