This book had me feeling slightly indifferent to the authors adventure and i was not exactly finding myself incapable of putting it down. However, i came to appreciate the book once complete. The appreciation stems from the fact that this is a great documentation of the world as it once was - nearly 40 years ago. From pre-russian invasion afghanistan, to Sri Lanka when it was called Ceylon, and the efforts of the Vietnam tourist board to showcase the parts of the country that were not currently at war in the early 70's, the author details an era long past when the world truly felt like a bigger place and a train-ride across half of it was the only way to experience it. In hindsight, this was a great read and would recommend it to people looking for a non-conventional travel book.
