This book is very well-written with believable characters whose lives interact in interesting ways. Overall I liked the book even though it is very depressing, giving a realistic portrait of poverty and racism. I could do without the long speeches by the drunk and the doctor, but still thought it to be worth the read (or listen, in my case).

Chapter one reminded me of a handful of Flannery O?Connor stories strung together and stripped of substance. Whereas O?Connor?s characters attack your conscience from their inception, McCullers?s characters are a little shy around readers. Let them develop and you might decide that the lineage points in the other direction.
