In early 19th century Massachusetts the small, isolated settlement of Dogtown is inhabited by eccentrics, misfits, and a pack of semi-feral dogs. The stories of the difficult lives of the villagers are interconnected, and tied, in particular, to the life of the kind-hearted, middle-aged Judy Rhines who harbours a scandalous secret.

Couldn't get into it. Maybe because the language of the characters (crude, obscene) seemed meant to shock more than illuminate. Didn't like them as people either as in wondering what's going to happen to them so I quit.

A very good story of people in a small, dying town.

If you like good reads that delve in hard times and dealings with them, but very enjoyable, read Angela's Ashes, Pastures of Heaven, Tortilla Flats, The Sea Wolf etc... I love realism with a spin.
This however, was disgusting
and put me in a foul mood afterward. I was born in New England this just s*cked!

A gem about local lore which will spark good little glimmers as you walk the terrain near Gloucester today.

I read The Read Tent and really enjoyed it, but I found this book to be a lot slower paced and not as interesting.

Read this book. What happens when a small community dies? where do its people go? what happens to them? Great peak into an historic era at the hard scrabble lives of the remaining residents of a small town on the east coast of the US. Very worth the read. Definitely my favorite by Anita Diamant.
