Steel describes the lives of three brave women in the backdrop of history. I would have to say Amadea is the main character in this powerful novel. Beata, the daughter and mother experiences a situation somewhat similar to what she herself put her parents through. It was an echo of the past; and that is what the book is all about. Every generation experiencing situations which though different have a de ja vue quality about them.

I thought I read this book even though it has been around a long time One of Steel's best books.

The characters were unforgettable and the vivid imagery tell it all. About three generations of women from one family living through the pre-war years to the Second World War. They were rich European aristocracy who lived fabled lives of luxury and security.

" Echoes weaves an intricate tapestry of a mother's love, a daughter's courageā€¦and the unwavering faith that sustained them--even in history's darkest hour." from a book review.
