An uncompromising, supercharged crime romance that splits its lead between two actors. Paul Bettany's young Gangster is an icy, repressed striver, except on a couple notable occasions. Malcolm McDowell's older Gangster is (surprisingly, given the subtlety of his work in A Clockwork Orange) a coarse animal. These two performances don't fit together; or, if they do, not in a sophisticated way. However, it's all well worth seeing, especially the scene where young Gangster invades a rival's flat, which is among the most frightening things recorded on film.
