Caney Paxton is a Vietnam veteran who wanted his cafe, The Honk and Holler, to have the biggest and brightest sign in Eastern Oklahoma. Twelve years later, the once-busy highway is dead, and the sign is as worn as Caney, who hasn't ventured outside the diner since it opened. The regulars at the Honk haven't changed much either. Then one blustery day, a thirtyish Crow woman blows in with a dog in her arms and a long-buried secret on her mind. Vena Takes Horse is soon shaking up business, the locals, and Caney's heart.

well the review was so extensive it was more like a retelling.

The dialogue was natural, a challenging feat, and captured a style unique to each person. Letts doesn’t “southern up” the whole book in the name of sounding like a certain region, which wouldn’t work with her diverse cast anyway. The different voices helped the novel come to life. It was so life-like, in fact, that at one point I found myself sobbing in distress because I thought one thing happened only to start sobbing again a chapter later to find out that it had not. I highly recommend The Honk and Holler Opening Soon and can’t wait to check out more work by this author.

While also taking place in her first novel's setting of Sequoyah, OK, this one has a different set of quirky people. A few are stock characters, but by the end most have become friends, not just to each other, but to the reader. The same warmth and humanity pervade a story in which not much, and yet everything, happens. A lovely book that begs for a sequel, as it leaves some dangling ends.
