Stop It There, Back It Up!

50 Years of Hockey With Howie Meeker

Book - 1999
Rate this:
Former Toronto Maple Leaf great Howie Meeker gives us his views on the great game of hockey: What were the best teams of each year? The greatest players, and lines? The most awesome dynasties? Who were the all-time All-Stars? The top 50 players? Who hit the hardest, skated the fastest, and had the best shot? In a tribute to those players whose lives or careers ended too soon, Meeker asks what might have happened if their time in hockey had not been cut short. Would Pelle Lindbergh have become one of hockey's greatest goalies? How many more goals would Bill Barilko have scored?

Meeker remembers the gentlemen of the game, such as Hap Day, Jean Beliveau, and Foster Hewitt, and the bad boys, including the notorious Eddie Shore and the wild Eddie Shack and Ted Lindsay? Meeker also discusses the darker side of hockey, including Alan Eagleson's famous misconduct.

Meeker also gives his opinions on how to fix the floundering Canadian hockey system, and compares the pro game of today to when he was a star for the Maple Leafs. And, he asks, where do we go from here?
