This was a great book - kept you turning the pages as you wanted to find out what was going to happen next. So many twists and turns some of which you could not have thought of happening. However the ending is truly sad and makes you wonder if perhaps there should be some real thinking about the decisions that are made regarding the welfare of children in our society.
(The fourth book in the Kenzie and Gennaro series)
Saw the movie first and then I had to read the book. The book is great a better than the movie. There's only so much that can go into a movie, but the book goes into great detail about the story and characters.
The movie was great, but the book is even better! Dennis Lehane is much more than a mystery writer; he goes beyond just telling a good, suspenseful story. This novel deals with how our society too often fails to protect our most vulnerable citizens, our children, not only from strangers, but from their parents, and there are no easy solutions. Like every other Lehane book that I have read, this book is an entertaining page turner, but it is also raw, emotional, dark, and disturbing. This book will make you cringe, make you think -- and make you laugh. This is the sixth Dennis Lehane novel that I have read, and I intend to read them all. He is an excellent writer, one of my favorites!
The ONLY other crime book that's better than this is the silence of the lambs.
I have consistently liked Lehane's later books so I went back to this one but it didn't do it for me. Drags on forever and nothing happens. Gave up about half way through which I rarely do.
A very intense novel about child abuse and kidnapping. Lehane always grabs me; this time I had to stop reading a few times because the content made me feel sick. Everything appears very reals and it makes you scared of people around you at times.
This is easily the most depressing book I've ever read. Not sad mind you, depressing: I feel an overall sense of unhappiness after finishing it. That being said, it's not a bad book by any means. It's amazingly well written, and the fact that it evoked such a powerful emotional response from me is testament to that. The characters all seem so real, as does the story, and the descriptions are amazing. A fantastic book, just don't read it if you want to keep your good mood.
