A national bestseller with close to one million copies in print, The First Wives Club was hailed for its "deliciously icy message--revenge is a dish best served cold" (Los Angeles Times). Now it's a major fall release from Paramount starring three of the most talented and popular actresses working today--Bette Middler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn.

This is one of those rare instances in which I think my review may be clouded by having seen the movie adaptation first, with the book falling short in comparison. The husbands in the book were pure evil and the wives' revenge wasn't noble, although Goldsmith does her best to make it seem so. Her brief online biography and a subsequent posthumous New York Metro article explains her motivation.

I thought the character development was a little ragged and the plot was too contrived. Also, I love the use of dialects, but I don't like the need to phonetically insinuate a foreign accent, especially when it's done badly. If she had applied it to a more major character, I wouldn't have finished the book. I have to give it only 2 stars with one of those due to the screenwriters for being able to dig a good story out of a sordid mess.
